Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th on the 18th of July 1994. She also grew up in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black father, and a white mother. She grew up mainly with her mother's family. Her skin shade made her feel rejected in her early years. [3] Her parents were struggling financially and had to move sixteen times in order to get her father's job. Russell stated that in spite of all the hardships, there was always the chance to reinvent yourself, to make something completely new. Russell's parents had financial difficulties and she was constantly in motion. Russell was eighteen when she started her first acting class. She used her earnings from work to buy a car and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. She would go back to work after her funds ran out and then resume making auditions again. It went on for four consecutive years, until she finally secured her first television show role.
